Real Estate Lawyer
Adler & Stachenfeld LLP
About 25 years ago – I guess now 27 years ago — I founded a law firm in New York City called Duval & Stachenfeld, with the name recently changed to Adler & Stachenfeld. By the way, my last name is in fact Stachenfeld.
Over the years I built this into a 50-lawyer powerhouse real estate law practice, which is today one of the top real estate law practices in New York City, including handling many billions of dollars of commercial transactions both domestically and in non-U.S. jurisdictions — sorry if I am kind of bragging her. This has been the biggest success story of my entire business life and I still have a feeling of pride and joy when I come into the office in the morning and find myself surrounded by talented lawyers and incredibly good people.
Notably – and uniquely – the heart and soul of the law firm is powered by our hedgehog, which stands for, well, love. It means we deeply care about our lawyers and our clients. That is the glue that holds us all together. I admit I really like that the essence of a law firm in the midst of the cutthroat NYC real estate industry is that we care about people. I suspect it is one of the reasons for our great success as the caring is very sincere and people feel it, both within the firm and as clients of it.
Among other things that we do at our law firm, we have an annual Outing in Florida, typically at a ritzy resort. This year – 2025 – our Outing was the One Hotel in Miami. There is much to tell, but at each Outing I get to make a speech at the main dinner on Saturday night. This time around, I devoted my words to what I wanted to leave my law firm when I – eventually but hopefully not any time soon – retired. After reflection, the answer to what I wanted to leave the firm was easy – it is My Heart. And my heart is in our hedgehog. I think it was probably the best speech I ever made — watch it now and let me know what you think!
